2021 Environment of Care Essentials

View

Are you a facility manager or emergency management coordinator who only needs Joint Commission standards that apply to the physical environment or emergency planning not the whole manual? Or, do you work in a health care system or as a vendor and need to accurately align compliance efforts across hospital, ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient behavioral clinics, or other settings of care?

Make standards compliance and preparing for survey easier with 2021 Environment of Care® Essentials for Health Care. This indispensable spiral-bound or PDF volume bundles the environment of care (EC), emergency management (EM), and life safety (LS) standards and elements of performance (EPs) for all settings in one convenient reference so the information you need is always right at your fingertips. Equipment management (EQ) standards, which appear only in the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Home Care, are also included.

A recently redesigned matrix will help you streamline compliance efforts in your facility and your health care system, allowing you to quickly cross-reference EC, EM, and LS requirements across settings. You can see similarities and differences at a glance. A simple matrix included at each requirement clearly identifies (with an x ) whether the requirement applies in each of the eight Joint Commission accreditation programs. Bracketed wording indicates how and where wording varies slightly across programs. Conversely, if standards, EPs, or notes vary greatly, abbreviations appear in brackets after that text noting it applies only to the programs listed, for example, ambulatory care (AHC), critical access hospitals (CAH), and hospitals (HAP).

Key Topics

  • Essential information for complying with EC requirements with regard to safety, security, hazardous materials and waste, medical equipment and utility systems, and fire safety
  • Complete Emergency Operations Plan/Emergency Management Plan requirements

A Clinician's Guide to Helping Children

View
Keith J. Slifer, a pediatric psychologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explores how adults can help children cope with routine and traumatic medical care. He draws on practice and research to help health care practitioners provide better care for children with chronic conditions and children undergoing rehabilitation after traumatic injury or surgery. By better understanding the behavior, emotions, and developmental challenges of children, health care professionals in practice and in training can solve a range of problems, from getting a distressed child to cooperate with a physical examination or diagnostic test, to teaching a child to adhere to medical self-care. More than 9 million children in the United States regularly visit health care professionals for treatment of chronic or recurrent health conditions. These children experience multiple doctors' visits, trips to the emergency department, hospital admissions, anesthesia, surgery, medications, needle sticks, wound cleaning, seizures, nausea, vomiting, pain, and fear. While most of these children are developing typically in terms of their intellectual and cognitive functioning, many children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities also require frequent medical care, and as chronic health conditions increase, so do the chances of having developmental, learning, emotional, and behavioral problems. A Clinician's Guide to Helping Children Cope and Cooperate with Medical Care will benefit health care professionals and children as practitioners aim both to improve medical care and to prevent the children's behavior from disrupting clinics and distressing and frustrating health care workers and family caregivers. This book is for pediatric psychologists, pediatricians, family medicine practitioners, physician's assistants, nurse specialists, pediatric subspecialists, and students in these fields

ACLS EP Manual and Resource Text

View
Every 5 years the American Heart Association publishes updated Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC). These guidelines reflect new global resuscitation science and treatment recommendations derived from the 2015 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) conference.

The ACLS EP Manual and Resource Text includes all of the information students will need to successfully complete the instructor-led, classroom-based ACLS EP course. It is also an important resource for ACLS EP instructors. It is intended for use by a single student as a reference tool before, during, and after the course. This manual contains information needed to access the ACLS EP student Website, the ACLS EP Systematic Approach Pocket Reference Card, and the ACLS Pocket Reference Card Set (15-1007). Based on the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and ECC.

Course Overview

This course is intended for seasoned healthcare providers who have demonstrated proficiency in performing BLS and ACLS skills, reading and interpreting ECGs, and understanding ACLS pharmacology, and who regularly lead or participate in emergency assessment and treatment of pre-arrest, arrest, or post-arrest patients. This audience includes physicians, paramedics, and emergency department or critical-care nurses. The course director may also allow other professionals who are deeply involved in the field of resuscitation to participate, including scientists, educators, and researchers.

The goal of ACLS EP is improving outcomes in complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other (e.g., metabolic or toxicologic) emergencies by expanding on core ACLS guidelines using critical thinking and decision-making strategies. Through instruction and active participation in case-based scenarios, students enhance their skills in the differential diagnosis and treatment of pre-arrest, arrest, and post-arrest patients.

After successfully completing the ACLS EP course, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating use of an AED
  • recognize and manage respiratory arrest
  • recognize and manage cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including post-cardiac-arrest care
  • demonstrate effective communication as a leader or member of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  • apply the systematic approach to assessment, evaluation, and management of complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other emergencies

Course is based on:

  • the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and ECC
  • the 2012 American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/AHA Focused Update of the Guideline for the Management of Patients with Unstable Angina/Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction
  • the 2013 ACCF/AHA Guidelines for the Management of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.
In order to take this course, students must pass a precourse examination with a grade of 84% or higher. The ACLS EP Exam Key (15-1411) must be purchased separately.
